MAKUENI COUNTY

In a landmark collaboration, the Association of Women in Agricultures Kenya (AWAK) has teamed up with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) to spearhead the implementation of the Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (Aiccra) project, generously funded by the World Bank.

This week, the heart of Makueni County beats with agricultural fervor as we gather for a three-day Training of Trainers (TOTs) session on Drought Tolerant Crops (DTCs). The participants, hailing from Kisau and Kitise wards, are small-scale farmers with big dreams of a climate-resilient future.

Climate Smart Agriculture: A Game Changer

Amidst the ever-growing challenges posed by climate change, Climate Smart Agriculture emerges as a powerful solution. By embracing techniques like Drought Tolerant Crops (DTCs), we pave the way towards adapting to these environmental shifts and fortifying our food security.

A Plea for Gender Equality in Agriculture

We’ve delved deep into understanding the profound impacts of climate change on Unpaid Care, a responsibility predominantly shouldered by women in small-scale farming. AWAK representatives shed light on strategies to alleviate this burden, striving for a fairer distribution of care responsibilities.

Hands-On Learning: A Day in the Fields

The ICRISAT technical team conducted illuminating demonstrations on optimal post-harvest storage techniques. Later, they led a practical session at KARLO kwa Kathoka. Here, participants immersed themselves in the 3, 4, 5 technique, crucial for spacing and planting Drought Tolerant Crops, alongside other vital steps in land preparation.

This collaborative effort is not just a training session—it’s a pivotal step towards a more resilient, sustainable agricultural future. AWAK and ICRISAT stand united, driven by the vision of empowering women in agriculture and ensuring food security in the face of a changing climate.
